Well I upgraded to 7 x64 (finally), and I decided to use my onboard soundcard instead of the slightly old SoundBlaster Audigy2 ZS. Motherboard is Asus M2N-Sli deluxe using SoundMax HD Audio.

I was lazy and left the soundblaster in there, and just turned on the onboard and everything was peachy.

Well, I noticed that when I locked and unlocked the machine when I left my desk, the onboard decided it wanted to make this really loud feedback type of noise out to my headphones. Really annoying, plus I think it would be damaging to my headphones after a while.

So I took the SoundBlaster card out, and it appears to have fixed the problem.

No idea what would cause this...if it were a 7 issue, or a driver issue or whatever. The card was just sitting in the slot with no drivers installed, so maybe a resource issue?

Reason why I'm not using the SoundBlaster anymore is a lack of good drivers for 7. They worked...but not very well; there would be distortion sometimes under heavy load which I did not like, and other little things that bugged me.

The only thing that comes to mind it that windows 7 might have installed its own drivers, via windows update perhaps, and once it did, it changed the sound settings within the system so that it would play whatever the mic was picking up through the speakers, and since normally when the head phones are on your head the mic wont feedback through the speakers, but when you take them off and lock the computer, the mic picks up on the headphones and causes feedback.

Otherwise, some random hardware issue. Time to upgrade!
